Did you know that one reason our children are safer in cars today is because for many years lawyers have filed lawsuits against automobile manufacturers that forced them to make safer cars? We now have seatbelts, airbags (front and side), safety glass, and cars that don’t unexpectedly jump into reverse, to name a few, because of products liability lawyers who proved that manufacturers knew about defects in their cars and forced them to make the changes they knew would be safer but which would cost a few pennies per car.

Here is a link to a short video from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety about a collision between a 50 year old car and a new car. Riding in a car now is safer than it was 50 — or even 20 — years ago. Our children are luckier, and so are we.

What a great idea! Put the baby in a swing where he can bounce around for a while, occupied and out of the way. And, best of all, the Jump and Jive Doorway Jumper even includes a musical foot pad to give the baby some musical entertainment.

The problem with this product is in the detachable toys on the straps. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled this product because of the possibility a baby could choke on these detachable toys.

Graco insists that once the toys and fabric straps are removed, the jumper is still safe to use.

That’s great, but what do babies this age do? They pull on toys — and put them in their mouths.

Don’t Get Burned By Your Wii Battery Charger

These days everyone wants a Wii: your kids, your husband, and the old man in the retirement home. It mixes video games with real life. Who could resist playing tennis and bowling from the comfort of their own living room? But, if you want to play, you need the hand-held remotes with charged batteries.

The good news is that Griffen International came out with a battery recharge docking station that keeps your remotes organized and charging when not in use. The bad news is that they were found to cause the battery packs to overheat. Result? Big risk of burn or fire.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall of the Psyclone Essentials and React Wii™ 4-Dock Battery Recharge Stations. This product was sold at major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Toys R Us, and Amazon.com between January 2008 and January 2009. Griffen International is offering a free replacement of the product.

Toys R Us Trade-In Program Ends September 20, 2009

Toys R Us launched a program to get used cribs and other children’s equipment out of the chain of commerce. If you bring a used crib, car seat and other baby products to a Toys R Us and trade it in on a purchase in the same category, Toys R Us will give you a 20% discount on the new item.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued 563 product recalls in 2008, up from 472 the year before and 402 in 2005, including cribs and play yards and and children’s jewelry. And, did you know that car seats have an expiration date on them? Materials can deteriorate over time, making them potentially less safe in a crash.

Toys R Us encourages daycare centers that want to make trade-ins in bulk to call ahead of time to be sure of merchandise availability.

Read This Before You Buy Used Toys and Equipment for Your Child

People used to get “hand-me-down” baby furniture from friends and relatives. Toys used to be handed down when the older child outgrew them. You could find all kinds of bargains at yard sales and advertised in neighborhood newspapers. Now, lots of us go to Craigslist if we want to buy or sell used children’s furniture, toys and clothing.

BUT, YOU MUST BE CAREFUL when buying used items for your child from whatever source. Why? Because the item might have been recalled between the time it was new and the time you buy it. The Consumer Product Safety Commission issues frequent recalls of products that can injure your child. Check out the CPSC website before buying a used item for your child to be sure it hasn’t been recalled for being unsafe.

Or, you might want to go to Toys R Us to take advantage of its discount program. Until September 20, 2009, it is giving consumers a 20% discount when they trade in used cribs, car seats and other baby products and make a purchase in those categories. Toys R Us launched this program in an effort to get older, unsafe products out of the chain of commerce.

Dangerous Circo Booster Seat from Target

Booster seats are supposed to make our children safer, not fling them around inside the car and cause injury. The buckle on any child seat, whether it be a stroller, high chair, or booster seat is supposed to keep wiggly children from falling out of their seat.

A booster seat sold exclusively at Target has been recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The buckle has a tendency to pop open unexpectedly. Many children have a non-stop nature — which is the reason the buckle is so important. So, when it doesn’t work, the risk of the chidlren falling from the chair is huge. Check it out here.

If you have one of these seats (that cost about $13), stop using it immediately and return it to your nearest Target for a full refund.
